British and Swedish researchers studied the issue of inheritance of feelings of love for dogs by analyzing the behavior and attitudes towards animals of many pairs of twins.

In a study on the genetic inheritance of love for dogs, which was recently published on nature.com, scientists conclude: identical twins, if they get dogs, in most cases both at the same time. But not every one of a pair of fraternal twins can have a four-legged pet.

These results surprised the researchers. Professor of Molecular Epidemiology at Uppsala University Tove Fall explains:

“We were surprised to come to the conclusion that a person’s genetic heritage has a significant impact on whether he should get a dog or not. The results of the study will be used in various fields related to understanding the interaction between humans and dogs. Although for many, dogs and other pets become full members of the family, rarely does anyone wonder how they affect a person’s daily life, his health. Some people have an incredible desire to take care of a dog, others have it completely absent.

Thus, according to the study, genetics plays a decisive role in the question of getting a dog.

Research is ongoing. And scientists are studying the influence of heredity on the manifestations of an allergy to dog hair, personal rejection of animals and other factors that will help a person make a choice: to get or not to get a dog.
